In its brutality, this fight helped mark the Ultimate Universe as a tonally different place to mainstream Marvel, and also imagines Captain America as not just an enduring icon, but someone whose sensibilities are literally from a different age. Although Steve would go on to date Jan, both she and Fury ultimately criticized Cap for his macho response, pointing out that his brutal attack on Hank was never truly a fair fight, and actually helped motivate Hank to betray the team to the Liberators in The Ultimates 2, perpetuating violence on a larger scale. The old-fashioned Captain America couldn't let this stand and secretly used SHIELD resources to find Hank with the purpose of bringing him in, with or without Fury's approval.Ĭaptain America uses the fight to demonstrate a lesson in the difference between overwhelming power and actual skill, using Giant-Man's size to his advantage and eventually dropping construction supplies on him, badly injuring Hank just as SHIELD arrives to order Cap not to engage. Janet was hospitalized, while Hank fled the scene, making himself a fugitive. When Jan fought back as the Wasp, Hank not only sprayed her with bug spray but also used his Ant-Man helmet to command a legion of ants to attack her while she hid in her miniature form. In the Ultimate Universe - a parallel Marvel dimension outside of mainstream Marvel continuity that allowed fans to follow modernized versions of their favorite characters - Captain America and Hank Pym were both members of the Ultimates (the Avengers in all but name.) Following their first major victory against the Hulk, Hank Pym and his wife Janet van Dyne, also known as Giant-Man and the Wasp, got into an argument which escalated after Hank struck Janet. This would be most apparent in the Ultimate Marvel Universe, where one of Steve's most brutal battles wasn't against the Red Skull or Baron Zemo, but with Hank Pym over his abusive treatment of his wife Janet van Dyne. Steve attempted to navigate this new world where his old-world values sometimes clashed not only with his enemies but also his allies in the Avengers. But, don’t worry – we have the picture! Both the parents have since died, upon the father’s death a lawyer contacts Nicole with the last bit of her mother’s will, which is really just some information and a request. After this came to light Rachel committed suicide, though the body was never found. Her father and mother split up because of infidelity on the father’s part, with a ‘not of legal age’ teenager named Rachel. You play as Nicole, a woman coming back to her old home after her and her mother left a decade ago. Verdict: 68%Īn effectively haunting setting marred by dreadful storytelling. The Suicide of Rachel Foster is a slow-paced walking sim. Though the game hints at possible paranormal goings-on, it keeps signs of this very small and subtle, meaning that you’re in doubt until near the end of the game as to whether anything you see or hear is really evidence of something spooky. This place and the unease it provokes mean the game is, in spite of itself, at least a partial success. However, I can’t deny that I still found its atmosphere terrifyingly effective. The Suicide of Rachel Foster is derivative, contrived, and poorly plotted. It often feels like an exercise in justifying what it frames as a genuine love story, and is reckless in failing to confront issues of abuse that inevitably require at least some thought when depicting a relationship like this. This amounts to a story about a middle-aged man grooming a 16-year old, but the game does not present it that way. Indicative of the way the game mishandles some heavy themes is its depiction of the relationship between Rachel Foster and Nicole’s father. The way the game holds you in a state of constant tension means you will still be glad of the relief a call from him offers – in that sense, the device has its intended effect – but again, issues here are indicative of problems that grow as the game’s narrative stumbles, unravels, and lands flat on its face in an awful conclusion. This is an idea clearly influenced by Firewatch, but it isn’t as well-written, nor the shifts in the characters’ relationship as well-earned. The oppressive loneliness of this space is broken up via calls to a FEMA agent who offers support and help to Nicole as she begins digging into the history of her family and the hotel. The game uses quiet creaks and shuffles to chilling effect, straddling a boundary where you can believe these are just the kind of sounds you’ll hear in any old building, or just maybe something far more unsettling. Long empty corridors build dread and anticipation as you trudge them dusty and dark spaces envelop you in paranoia about whether you are truly alone here and forays away from the safe space of Nicole’s old childhood bedroom, into the guts of the hotel’s infrastructure, are expeditions of constant background terror. The sense that it is contrived is easily forgivable early on due to the effectiveness of the setting the game places you in. This, it turns out, is a warning of what’s to come. However, an unexpected blizzard leaves you trapped alone, with only a phone connected to a FEMA agent to keep you company.Įven early on, there is a sense of narrative events being inelegantly twisted around a concept that’s yet to reveal itself. Nicole is supposed to perform a quick inventory with the family’s lawyer and sanction a sale. The game opens with protagonist Nicole arriving at a long-closed and partially derelict hotel that she has inherited following her father’s death.
